 Chevrolet, Barrett-Jackson Auctioning First 2014 Corvette Stingray This Weekend

General Motors announced late yesterday that the first salable 2014 Corvette Stingray will be auctioned this coming weekend at Barrett-Jackson’s annual Scottsdale event. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit. Although the owner will have some say in final color/trim selections, the car itself will assuredly carry a serial number ending in 0001, and be the first car off the line – following, of course, a series of pre-production units that won’t be sold to the general public.
This isn’t the first time an automaker – or Chevrolet, for that matter – has auctioned off the first example of an all-new sports car for charity. Heck, it’s not even the only specialized Chevrolet that’s up for grabs at this year’s B-J auction. The first 2013 Camaro ZL1 convertible is also up for grabs, with its final asking price benefiting the Achilles International charity. A drag-prepped 2012 Camaro COPO Convertible – one of two made – will be sold to benefit the American Heart Foundation. GM CEO Dan Ackerson’s own ’58 Corvette will cross the block with all proceeds destined for a Detroit-area chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Chef Guy Fieri’s tricked-out 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible, which debuted at last year’s SEMA show, will be sold to benefit his Cooking With Kids foundation.
That said, given the buzz surrounding the C7 Corvette – not to mention the fact this auction comes but six days after the 2014 Corvette Stingray’s official debut – we’d expect the 2014 Corvette to bring in some big bucks. That’s good news for CCS, and potentially even the person who pays up for the first Stingray. GM hasn’t announced pricing for the C7 yet, but the winning bidder may be able to claim the portion paid over MSRP as a charitable tax write-off.
